The importance of healthy water in pregnancy and for your baby.

Pregnancy is often a time when you start to question many things and how they may impact you and the wonderful baby growing inside you. It is a time when your priority is to ensure your baby is given the very best start to life and it can be overwhelming all the areas in which need to be changed. It seems that everybody has an opinion about what you should be avoiding and what you need to include to your daily regime for the baby!

However, there are two things that seem to be universally agreed upon when it comes to pregnancy and newly born baby’s:

  • Minimising your exposure to chemicals in all forms, and
  • Drinking plenty of pure water.

Why is water healthy for me and my new baby?

Clearly healthy water is vital to a healthy pregnancy. How does pure water feature with your growing baby ?

The amniotic fluid that protects the developing baby is principally water.

  • The baby itself is approximately 94 % water   (Source: projectwet.org).
  • The blood that flows from you to your baby is 90% water (Source: Stanford.edu).
  • The carbohydrates and proteins that you and your baby’s bodies use for food during pregnancy are metabolised and transported by water in the bloodstream, which is how your baby is being supplied with the essential proteins and enzymes needed to develop the baby during pregnancy.

Healthy water is a vital during pregnancy for you and your baby.

While it is universally accepted that regular water intake is important during pregnancy; is the water that comes from our taps adequate, or is healthy, pure water more appropriate to good maternal and baby health?

The answer to this question depends on whether or not it is thought to be acceptable to drink safe water that still contains chemicals, minerals, pathogens and other contaminants as well as chlorine and fluoride that are deliberately introduced into the water supply. In fact water supply authorities may use over 36 different chemicals to treat the water before it arrives in your home.

If we just consider the chlorine added to the water supply to kill potentially dangerous bacteria and make it “safe” to drink. The truth is that chlorine is not ‘safe’ –  it is a dangerous chemical that can be linked to many adverse health conditions

  • Chlorine hardens arteries,
  • Chlorine destroys proteins in the body,
  • Chlorine kills beneficial and essential bacteria in our digestive tract,
  • Chlorine weakens our immune system,
  • Chlorine causes deficiency in vitamins and minerals,
  • Chlorine irritates the skin and sinuses
  • Chlorine aggravates asthma, allergies and respiratory problems.

Importantly, when chlorine comes into contact with other chemicals and organic matter, it reacts with them and new by-product chemicals are formed. Some of the by-product chemicals that are found in drinking water are:

  • Trichloroacetaldehyde,
  • Haloacetonitriles,
  • Dichloroacetonitrile,
  • Trihalomethane (THMs),
  • N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA),
  • Dibromoacetonitrile,
  • Bromochloroacetonitrile and
  • Dioxin.

All of these chemicals are extremely toxic and are recognised by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) as known carcinogens. The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines also recognises these chemicals, which studies have shown to have negative health impacts, as being present in municipal water supplies.  In addition the Guidelines also identify:

  • Chlorine,
  • Fluoride,
  • Aluminium,
  • Copper sulphate,
  • Arsenic,
  • Herbicides,
  • Pesticides, and
  • Ammonia,

as being present in drinking water supplies.

Most health service providers recognise that the ingestion of these chemicals gives rise to a range of negative, long-term health implications and it is reasonable to expect that it is really not good during pregnancy and their developing babies.

It is very easy to efficiently remove the chemicals and contaminants from your household water and know that when you turn your tap on you are blessed with clean, pure and great tasting water, which is what you want. The best answer is Crystal Water’s reverse osmosis water purification system.

Are these chemicals only a concern because I am pregnant?

No. The human body is not equipped to process and expel these chemicals and they tend to be deposited in various organs and tissues in the body. Some can cause cell mutation which can lead to serious health concerns.

However, chemical exposure and ingestion during pregnancy is a great concern because of the likely transmission of the toxins to the developing child through the placenta which may well jeopardise the long term health of the baby. You can guard against this and guarantee a supply of pure water by using Crystal Water’s reverse osmosis water purification system.

My mother drank tap water during pregnancy and I’m fine, why should I be concerned?

Our environment is being impacted by varying chemicals more and more as the years go by. Previous generations lived in a much cleaner, simpler environment with less pollution and lower population. Our drinking water supply has been gradually compromised by these pressures and the types of chemicals and their rates of use now differ significantly those applicable 20 or 30 years ago. Removal of these chemicals and other contaminants from our water supply can be guaranteed by the installation and use of Crystal Water’s reverse osmosis water purification system.

How can I remove these chemicals from my drinking water?

Crystal Water has a range of water purification systems to suit your needs and your budget. For complete protection we recommend our reverse osmosis water purification system.
